What is LetsGoLocal?

Lets go local (LGL) is a local web directory that does what it says on the can....it encourages local residents to use local service providers (LSPs) within the 20 mile radius that is the LetsGoLocal "zone".

It's the brain child of Richard Beldon, local resident and ex Champneys Springs manager for 15 years, who as an increasingly regular user of the internet was frustrated and dissatisfied with the ones he used for research in his previous job.

They either were populated with national or even international advertisers with more of a marketing budget to spend so got priority positions, pop ups (a huge turn off) and annoying banner ads with no relation to what he was looking for or were not detailed enough for what was required and certainly had little or no local identity.

LGL is to offer all LSP's up to a 400 word profile with options for up to 4 photo's and full contact listings and a web link irrespective of the size or nature of their business.

It is a perfect opportunity for those businesses without a shop window or a web site of their own to promote their services on a level playing field with those more fortunate to have one or both of these facilities already.

Our Mission

Some of the free sites and commercial sites are pretty good but they were not the norm and so LetsGoLocal set the following goals for the web directory for this area:

  • Only local businesses within a 20 mile radius of Ashby de la Zouch
  • No pop up ads
  • No banner ads
  • No priority positioning on the site
  • A fair tariff based on annual turnover
  • Not just a web directory but one for the community
  • Free listings for all local charities, community services and not for profit organizations
  • A local what's on facility
  • A strong environmental policy and commitment to local green and environmental issues and initiatives
  • A late deal option to maximize last minute offer opportunities

LGL is to offer all LSP's up to a 400 word profile with options for up to 4 photo's and full contact listings and a web link irrespective of the size or nature of their business.

It is a perfect opportunity for those businesses without a shop window or a web site of their own to promote their services on a level playing field with those more fortunate to have one or both of these facilities already.

The finished product is a forever growing list of local service providers in our local area for the 1.5 million residents in the "zone" in what is the LetsGoLocal web directory.

Local residents and businesses will be able to source exactly what they are looking for without having to trawl through the web or telephone directories.

LetsGoLocal practices what it preaches

LGL used 22 local services to develop its business and continues to do so and all of them offered a level of service second to none, commitment to deliver, were price competitive and offer a level of loyalty and personal attention that you can only receive at a local level.

Since the business has been developing there have been at least half a dozen opportunities to "spread the word" of other local service providers and indeed LGL have already passed on some work to those who have signed up already whilst recruiting others. An electrician for example got some work the day after he put his profile on the site even before LGL launched as it was seen by another local business when they were reviewing the directory during a sales presentation.

The community- putting the unity into community

Supporting local businesses, shopping locally, trading locally they all create a thriving local economic community that can and indeed does have a massive roll on effect to the rest of the community as a whole.

By supporting local community initiatives, events and activities from all around the "zone" LGL will help to raise the profile of all these worthy causes.

Local community services such as museums with free admittance, parks, and volunteer services, local charities such as local hospices, LOROS, counseling services and drop in centre's and all not for profit organizations can all register their profiles, the same size as the local service providers but with the added bonus of being free.

They have dedicated categories in the search engine and equal billing on the what's on for all their fund raising events and activities throughout the year. Sports clubs, social clubs, activity clubs that offer a service to the community can also make use of this facility creating a thriving local community to the LetsGoLocal directory.

The LetsGoLocal commitment to the environment

LGL is also committed to "doing our bit" for the environment and has a whole section of the site dedicated to the local environment and any local initiatives that make our local area a better place for now and the future.

There will be guest writers from local businesses sharing their environmental ideas, policies and projects, articles from local councilors on what the local councils and government initiatives/activities are with progress reports and tips and advice from the local resident themselves on how we can all help keeping our area a pleasant place to work and live in.

Companies large and small can all play their part and LGL are no exception and have strong environmental policies and standards

  • Only use recycled paper or that from managed forests
  • Where possible uses companies with environmental policies that support that of the local govt requirements
  • Of course trading locally therefore reducing their carbon footprint
  • Recycling policy in the office
  • Signed up for a local recycling of cartridges campaign offering a credit for each one recycled and then donating the value to a charity of their choice
  • Commitment to add articles of real value to the environment monthly

So how does the directory work?

The directory had to be easy to navigate, even for those not familiar with how directories work, and the (Local ) web designers had many other demands out on them as to how it should work and with their expertise a new search method and IT techniques were put in place to ensure it is a user friendly search facility. Your feedback on this would always be appreciated and the site will evolve over time as more and more feedback is forthcoming.

There are four methods of searching for what you are looking for:

Using the search facility

Know the company name simply type in the search box to get what you are looking for or know the product or service you want then the LSP's have up to ten words that navigate you to their profile. Bit like word association. Type in nails then all the LSP's using that as a tag word would be found but remember that could be nail painting or nails for DIY.

Browse by category

LSP's choose two categories from; Food/drink Lifestyle, business, retail, maintenance, home/garden, cars, wellbeing, community, charity for example a stationer may choose business and retail as they may want to attract corporate and private customers and a plumber may choose home/garden and maintenance.

Browse by location

Want to see what's in a particular area then look up all the LSPs by areas. Currently Ashby, Coalville, Swadlincote, Derby, Leicester, Burton, Loughborough,Tamworth,Shepshed, Rugeley and Uttoxeter are listed. Villages will be put into the location it is nearest for example Measham will be under Ashby de la Zouch, Newton Linford in Loughborough and Tutbury in Burton on Trent. In time there may be a necessity to filter this further and LGL will do so if the demand is high enough.

Browse by offers

Want to go straight to the special, and exclusive offers or the late offers simply click onto either of the offer options and on the screen will come all the offers from the local service providers and to find out more click onto the offer you are interested in and it will then be tagged onto the bottom of the service provider providing that offer.
