The Footprints Challenge

North West Leicestershire District Council has issued a challenge to families, individuals, groups, children and businesses in the district. The challenge is to change the way we all act to make the district a cleaner and greener place to live, work and visit.

The Challenge is called Footprints and, through a series of targeted events and activities, is seeking to bring about a major change in the way people act and think about the environment.

There are five key areas where we would like people to help us make a difference:

• Wildlife and Countryside – We want people to help us make the district an even better place for wildlife and provide countryside that people enjoy.
• Waste reduction and recycling – Recycling more and reducing waste means we burn less fuel and don’t need to put so much rubbish into landfill sites.
• Travel – There are many ways of getting around apart from cars. Cycling, walking and using public transport all burn less fuel and can help people to stay fit.
• Energy – A lot of our energy comes from fossil fuels. Switching things off at the mains and adjusting heating down by 1 degree all help to save money and tackle climate change.
• Carbon reduction – Much of what we do pumps carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Reducing the amount of carbon we produce means we can slow down the effects of climate change.

There are lots of ways to get involved in the Challenge. To sign up, enter the awards, find out more or to tell us what you are doing to improve the environment just visit www.nwleics.gov.uk/footprints.
