FAIRTRADE EXPLAINED

Fairtrade does make a difference

Fairtrade relationships with producers not only guarantee a higher price for the product but an extra premium for the community helps develop local healthcare, introduce clean water supplies or improve local schools. These projects totally change the lives of the people who harvest your coffee, tea or sugar.

Fairtrade products taste good

The awards won by many fair-trade products show just how great they really taste – one Fairtrade approved coffee company won six prizes in 2007.

Find out more about Fairtrade

Fairtrade knows the growers, producers and harvesters of all its products by name. At the Fairtrade.og.uk website you can read their stories, see their photos and find out how your actions are improving the lives of others.

Creating a better life

A few extra pence on each individual product may not seem much but in volume can add to a better life for Fairtrade farmers. When the farmers own more of the business – like the company making Divine chocolate bars for example – more profits are passed directly onto the workers in the field.

Fairtrade does not take money from British farmers

British trade is not actually affected by the Fairtrade practice, as Fairtrade products are ones that cannot be produced here in the UK. Fairtrade does encourage local people to support local growers too and buy local produce in the area they live in.

The Fairtrade logo

Though some companies may say their products are fairly traded, only Fairtrade branded produce is guaranteed to benefit producers in the developing world. If it does not have the Fairtrade logo it does not have that ethical guarantee.

Fairtrade Products

It’s true that most Fairtrade products are food but new products are always being sourced and produced and introduced. Fairtrade wines, beers, flowers and cotton/ clothing are all now available. You can even buy Fairtrade footballs!

It’s never been easier to buy Fairtrade

Just look for the logo. If its fairly traded it will have the Fairtrade label on it. Some supermarkets now only offer Fairtrade lines in products like tea and coffee its never been easier to buy Fairtrade.

LOCAL did you KNOW

There is a huge variety of Fairtrade product to choose from in all major supermarkets and many local shops in North West Leicestershire and throughout the Midlands.

More than 40 retailers now offer over 2,000 different products in the local area from gourmet organic chocolate and exotic fruit to essentials like rice and clothing.
